The Role of the Vanguard | From "The Little Teal Book"

Chapter II from The Little Teal Book

We said previously that all things exist with a positive component and a negative component simultaneously. Such is the law of dialectics. It must also be stated, however, that only under certain conditions will the positive or negative be dominant. When it comes to building and unifying the American Nation, it is of paramount importance that there be an institution in place to manufacture and maintain such positive conditions. It is necessary that we have a popular, disciplined, and revolutionary national organization that can carry the sword and the shield of the creolized nation.

Under present conditions, the risk for the reactionary component of the nation to flourish is great. Recall that the American Nation has both a revolutionary and reactionary character. The reactionary character is dominant under the current system because, in a system that thrives off division and the competition of individuals, those factors that cause division and competition will always be more visible. The system that exalts capital and its accumulation is inherently designed to divide the multifaceted identities of our nation into a simple binary: what is to be exploited, and who is to exploit. A nation divided in this way ceases to be a coherent nation and is thereby no longer dangerous in a revolutionary fashion.

In a society dominated by capital, where there is also a distinctive pre-existing lack of consciousness surrounding the general exploitation of the masses, simply embracing revolution without revolutionary organization is infantile and dangerous. It would be — to reference Stalin — akin to an "army without a General Staff." Organizing a mass movement, unifying these various groups and nations, is a frivolous exercise without an understanding of what one is fighting for. The education of the masses by a national organization built for this purpose has shown wild effectiveness in the revolutions in Russia, China, Korea, or Vietnam, where revolutionary action was taken by a unified party of revolutionaries. In America, a unified party for freedom and democracy would be a rainbow coalition that understands the needs and revolutionary potential of all those marginalized societies within the United States.

It is understood that organized parties run the risk of factionalism and petty politicking beyond the necessities of the revolution. These problems are largely rectified through the creation and authority of a vanguard. A party must have a system of structured dissent such that all views (in line with the revolutionary character of the nation) may be debated until consensus is reached. Once a decision has been made, it is in the best interest of the movement to defend said decision.

Respected Comrade Kim Il Sung noted:

"Since the Marxist-Leninist party is the vanguard of the working class,..., [the working class] must be the backbone and nucleus of the party."

That is — to use our Neo-Unionist framing — to say that since our party is the vanguard of the American Nation, the American Nation ought to make up the core of our party. In a manner of speaking, we are axiomatically declaring that to create a party for freedom and democracy, we must center those marginalized. Our party ought to have democratic institutions that adequately represent the American Nation. Our party must follow principles of democratic discussion, democratic representation, and a unified image to represent the needs and goals of our nation.

Recall again the dualistic nature of the nation. The American Nation has a reactionary character that, without a disciplined vanguard, may bring disorderly behavior within the revolution. Reactionary infiltration into the party is a mortal danger to the revolution and is unambiguously unacceptable to permit. The reactionary, centrifugal force that exists within the nation — compelling her to total disruption based on the ethnic, religious, or cultural characteristics of her members — is amplified by media and by the conditions of competitive society. The education and selectiveness of the party serves to prevent this collapse. Those who would rather assimilate into the hegemony or subjugate other nations need not be members of the party. As J.V. Stalin put it in his Foundations of Leninism, we ought to be the "organized detachment of the working class." We join the party through education and training, and act as the highest organized institution of the American Nation with the duty and authority to act in the best interest of the people.

In total, the vanguard serves as a defense mechanism against fascism and hegemony. The party ought to be built by, of, and for the American Nation and act on their behalf. The party's sole purposes are to (a) be the educated representation of the will and good of the people and (b) stand closest to the machinery of the system as the proxy of the people. A party for freedom and democracy is the highest organ through which participatory democracy can occur, and the strongest organ through which the reaction can be defeated.
